Would you like to see what the Universe actually looks like? Would you like to know how the universe began? Would you like to know how it came into existence?
Now you can! (I've linked the video below)
Within the last year, scientists have brought us to the point where we have a very clear picture of what this universe looks like... and you can see it!
As we receive images from the Hubble and other space telescopes we are seeing the universe as it was billions of years ago and with this information scientists are able to put together a rendered, computerized model, based on photos of this very universe, as if we are seeing it from outside (if such a place existed. We can even "glimpse" dark matter for the first time in the history of the world. Well, we can't really see it because it doesn't respond to light but we know its patterns and structure.
Today, (as in right this minute as you read this), we are discovering more about this place in which we find ourselves.
Did you know there are an estimated 100 billion galaxies in our universe? That is a large number, difficult to conceptualize so it may help to realize that this number is about equivalent to the number of grains of sand on the Earth. In other words there is a galaxy for every grain of sand on the planet.
And each of these 100 billion galaxies has about 100 billion stars.
In other words, there are about 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars in our universe.
The number is incomprehensible.
And, of all those stars there are many, perhaps most that have solar systems with planets circling around them. Who knows how many planets are out there? What sort of other life forms might exist?
So, if you want to see the very latest images and models of the universe, I invite you to watch a fabulous video of a brief presentation by astrophysicist, cosmologist, and Nobel Prize winner George Smoot, shared by TED Talks* and Serious Play.
It is truly stunning.
See the Universe as you have never seen it before.... Click here!
*If you are not familiar with TED talks (Technology, Entertainment, Design), now may be a good time to check it out. Each year a the TED conference, TED gathers invited speakers from around the world to share their latest research, designs, and creativity with the world. The twenty minute talks are video taped and placed on the TED talks website for all of us to see. This is a fabulous way to keep abreast of all the latest information bubbling into existence the world over.

Jennifer,
Thanks for sharing this amazing insight into the creation of our universe.
Hi Jennifer,
Wonderful blog entry....seeing that video made my head explode...almost!
Those huge galactic formations talked about in that video are truly amazing.
Reminds me of lyrics that I am very fond of. A song by 'Kansas':
"Just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do
Crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind,
Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
And all your money won't another minute buy
Dust in the wind..."
______________
I do disagree with the speaker in that video about things fundamental, however.
He keeps talking in terms of a designer...he keeps trying to imagine how 'it was all put together'.
I feel it is impossible that there is a designer. I have come to understand that the universe is something spontaneous. No designer, no magic beings who put it together.
[I am not biased against the existence of a God or supreme being or aliens....so this above statement is absolutely not some kind of prejudice manifesting.]
I base the above conclusion in a very powerful theory named 'Chaos Theory', also known as 'Non Linear Systems Theory'. I have been following this theory for more than 10 years now, and understand its essence, scope, and details to a very large extent. I think you know what Chaos Theory is.
The Cosmos is a spontaneous, volitionless manifesation. The living principle manifesting out of nothingness every second. Vanishing back into nothingness every second. An eternal, spontaneous energy dance of creation and destruction.
I also think our Cosmos has existed eternally.
Impossible that there was a time when the Cosmos did not exist at all!
Not possible to elaborate in the comments section. But I will make a blog entry on this one of these days.
regards
Vikram.
Hi Jenn,
Some more thoughts:
Like I wrote above, I am not against the existence of Jesus, Allah, or Hindu/Buddhist gods and goddesses. Or any other, for that matter.
If they exist,it does not disturb the 'universe as a spontaneous, volitionless manifestation of the living principle' outlook.
If these supreme beings do exist, they are just players in the cosmic game. They didn't create the game.
Some ancient hindu texts also say that 'gods are just players in the dance of life'.
Some hindu texts describe God as the 'great non-doer', the silent witness of the cosmic dance.
I've forgotton the references, sorry.
Its not necessary for the Cosmos to have a creator. Its not necessary for the Cosmos to have a beginning...or an end.
Or so I feel!
regards
Vikram
