Leading the Way

ammachi, goodness graciousness, goodnessgraciousness, leadership, heal the world, leaders and followers
I've been tagged by John, fabulous author of The Leadership Epidemic to post about leadership!

More specifically, John asks, "Does most leadership suck?"

Great question and one I have recently contemplated.

First, I know some fabulous leaders! Great women and men who inspire, uplift, and bring a powerful light to our world.

Having said this, I think truly great leaders are rare indeed.

To be sure, there is a world full of men and women who know all the tricks, oops, I mean techniques of leadership. They know how to get people behind them, they have the leadership handbooks memorized, and effectively use their skills. There are people with charisma, charm, and good looks, who seem to get a following wherever they go.

But for me, a truly great leader is more than this.

Regardless of their leadership skills, leaders are not truly great unless they have a sense of integrity and decency. I tire of leaders who seem obsessed with being adored, worshipped, or idolized; whose ego seems boosted with every new follower; whose power increases with each new moment of glory.

The people I consider leaders in my own life are those whose very lives inspire and uplift me. They are often quiet, unassuming, gentle people to whom I look when I need help finding my way. They are those whose light shines brightly giving me hope, support, acceptance, and direction. They are those whose very lives speak of goodness, peace, and care; who seem to have a sense of graciousness toward all of life.

They are my examples.

And, if you are reading this, my guess is that you are one of those whose wisdom, thoughts, and life has been a light, teaching me, supporting me, and helping me on my journey.

To those truly great leaders, I thank you.

Namaste!

Hi Jennifer,

You are one of the good examples of a truly great leader. I enjoy every of your post and learn a great deal from you.

Rightly said!.. Knowing all the leadership techniques well doesn't really make one a good leader even though things get moving.

"Reputation is what the world thinks a man is; character is what he really is."

Jennifer, if I am not mistaken, there is a typo error. I believe you mean unless one with a sense of integrity and decency, a leader can never be truly great!- I agree with you on that.

Good leaders are followed chiefly because people trust and respect them, rather than the skills they possess.

Blessings to you my dear friend

Hi Jennifer,

After Priscilla Palmer's self development list Jenny and I have decided to try to help build the self development community. So we are holding a little contest. I would like to invite you, and anyone else interested, to find out more details at Win a $25 Gift Certificate.

Hi Jenn!

Indeed! A true leader is hard to find. I believe that a true leader is not only one who leads. But rather one who serves those that he leads. Hence the term Servant Leader.

Blessings & Thanks for the Good Post!

Jen,

Well said.

The greatest leaders are those who either don't know that they lead, or do not actually want to lead.

Jennifer,
Although you're not only speaking of political leaders, one of my favorite quotes -- in fact, I'd say it's my motto -- comes from that realm: "Anyone who would run for political office is not someone I'd vote for." I don't know who said it first. Maybe I did ;-) I do know that it applies to most of our world's acknowledged "leaders." In that context, it could be restated as "Anyone who would set themselves up as a leader is not someone I'd care to follow."

I believe you are absolutely correct in your assessment of true leaders. Leadership must start from a place of humility and caring; it must incorporate a desire to serve, and it can only be bestowed, never claimed.

Hi Sam,

Ohh thank you for the info on my typo! I have got to get in the habit of proof reading and spell checking. :-)

And, thank you for your kindness. I do not consider myself a leader.. more of a wonderer! ;-)

I'm with you.. truly great leaders are more than people with a few learned skills!

Thanks for your help Sam,

Jen

Hi Waterlearner,

I so agree with you... truly great leaders are servants!

I think of you being our servant leader during bootcamp! ;-)

You are a lovely example of the kind of leader of which I speak... someone who is there to inspire, motivate, share, support, and encourage!

Bless you my friend,

Jen

Hi Dave...

Yep! I agree! Nicely stated!

I think the leaders in my life most likely do not know they are a light for me!

So... just so you know, you are one!

Hugs,

Jen

Hi Amel...

Thanks for your kindness and support!

Also, you are the first person I have ever met who lives in Lapland! :-) Supposedly, I have ancestors from that part of the world!

I am so happy to have you share your spirit with me here!

Blessings to you,

Jen

Hi Eric..

LOL! I love this... "anyone who would run for office is not someone I would vote for!" ;-)

So, funny and so true!

I heard a discussion recently stating how many politicians have been arrested or are under investigation.. it made me shudder!

Would it be possible to get some honorable people to run for office?

Maybe not! LOL!

Nice to see you Eric.. hope your summer was a lovely one!

Being able to inspire and encourage others is a skill that is not appreciated enough. Everyone can do it, but it takes an effort. I think it should be a goal of all people to do a little of both each and every day...

Hi ComeClean,

I'm happy you found your way to my site!

I agree with you that we can all inspire and uplift each other.

And, I like the idea of having that as a goal, each day to inspire another!

Thank you for your thoughts...

Blessings to you,

Jennifer
