The Law of Sacrifice....

the law of sacrifice, to make sacred, goodness graciousness
I have struggled with the Law of Sacrifice ever since I understood the story of Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac.

I still don't get it.

Well, at least not in the typical way.

The whole idea of sacrifice has that ring of killing one's animals or loved ones to appease the Gods in hopes of less natural disasters. Or giving premiere foods and treasures to various deities to be worthy of more blessings.

I see "sacrifice" differently.

The idea behind the word sacrifice is actually... "to make sacred."

Now this I can understand. In fact, I love this idea.

Regardless of one's religion or faith tradition or philosophical beliefs we can each understand the idea of bringing into our lives something more lovely and powerful than the routine and mundane of life.

The idea of making life sacred gives me a sense of bringing holiness or goodness into the world. Rather than diminish our potential and glory, making life sacred creates the idea of bringing into being the totality of what is beautiful in each of us.

Making life sacred means existing in gratitude to God or the universe that has brought us to existence. It means giving our lives to the sacred unfolding of awareness and consciousness. It means feeling in the ordinary, the depth of energy that brought everything forth.

Let me give a few examples...

We can unconsciously eat whatever seems tempting regardless of its nutrients, without even thinking of the miracle of the transformation of energy that is creating us.... OR we can make eating sacred by taking a moment to contemplate the incredible process of life.

We can hurry through the day worrying about traffic, bills, our car problems... or we can periodically experience those moments of silence where we see ourselves as part of a grand story unfolding by the minute.

We can treat each other as competitors, animals, beings to hurt, use, or ignore.... or we can remember the gift of life and the common need we each have to love and be loved, as we try to manage a difficult journey.

To make sacred means bringing into our minds and hearts a greater awareness of our existence, and with that knowledge, sacrifice our lives, or rather....

Make our lives sacred.

Your post brought back memories of one of the biggest sacrafices in human history. I am not quoting it here in religious context. Let us see it in human context:

With his sacrifice, Imam Hussain (AS) attracted to himself the eyes of all the free-thinking people of his time and of all the time to come. In that time of confusion, when right and wrong had become so intermixed. Many had lost distinction, Imam Hussain (A.S), in Karbala, irrevocably re-established that distinction, creating a clear, incisive demarkation between right and wrong, and leaving no doubts (for even the most prejudiced of historians) about the fact that the right lay with him.

Establishing this fact, Imam Hussain (A.S), through his words and actions and the words and actions of his companions, encapsulated the truth within a short span of time, in the field of Karbala, creating a beacon of light for the truth seekers of all times.

It is this event that has made free thinking people of all times love Hussain (A.S) with a selfless love beyond compare.

I only hope that I have made a point here.

Hi Jen, great article as usual.

The idea that "everything is sacred" is also the central belief of Catholicism (and is what drew me to the RC Church in the first place.)

The Catholic mystics wrote some beautiful poetry and prose about sanctity. Try looking up the "Canticle of the Sun" by St. Francis of Assisi.

Great post. I also think about this concept of sacrifice/sacredness in terms of stewardship and communal devotion. The gifts we each have are nothing if we don't care for them and use them to try to make the world a better place.

Hi Scott... I LOVE St. Francis of Assisi! I will certainly check out Canticle of the Sun! It sounds like something I will totally enjoy! :-)

I like the idea of making life sacred, and santifying life.

It rings true for me!

Blessings Scott...and thanks for the article! I'll let you know how I feel after reading it!

Hi Dio... thanks for your thoughts and reminder.

I'm certainly not an expert on Islam but if I recall correctly Imam Hussain sacrificed his life as a martyr for the sake of truth around 650 CE.

There certainly is admiration for those who give their lives whether in death or whether in life for their beliefs of goodness and life.

To make our lives sacred, to me means we honor life in all ways. We bring ourselves out of the mundane world into a world of beauty and holiness!

Thanks for being here Dio... blessings and peace to you! :-)

Jennifer,
Thank-you for reminding me to remember to make life and all of the things in it more sacred. Excellent article. I know that I am very grateful, however I may fall short on recognizing all that is sacred. Thank-you.
